Who We Serve

We help "Missing Middle" renters

Millions of hard-working Americans are in the Missing Middle. They make too much to receive substantial housing subsidies, but it's a struggle to make ends meet.

Sonbrenea Oklahoma City, OK

Sonbrenea is a daycare teacher and a single mother to her 5-year old son. She’s the only income earner in her household, but makes too much to qualify for other forms of help. She's been living at her property since we first started serving residents there in 2022.

On Rent Splitting

“I actually really like [Rent Splitting], it helps because I can pay the first half and I have the money left over to pay bills and get what I need when I need it”

“I feel like if I didn't have [Rent Splitting] and I had to literally pay the whole thing and then pay bills, it would be a struggle to eat.”

“Here I have my lights to pay and internet, but with that split it helps. I can pay this months [rent] and I can also manage to pay these. I think that if I didn’t have the Rent Splitting, I would have already been gone.”

“I literally tell everybody who asks me, oh my apartment does rent split, you might want to go over there—‘cause you're struggling, they're gonna help you with the rent!”

Charisse Birmingham, AL

Charisse is a full-time paralegal, and also has a part-time night job. She lives with her mother who is retired and collects Social Security. They share the rent payment, but Charisse is the primary breadwinner. Charisse uses Rent Splitting to help juggle expenses and Rent Loan as a non-predatory alternative to payday loans.

On Rent Splitting

“I try to be leery of how much food I buy. I can’t, like, shop week to week. It has to be in bulk, so basically I have to do it all at once. But we’re pretty good at food lasting. I’ve downsized a lot.”

“They offer [Rent Splitting] to us every month. I’m kinda glad they do, because that has helped me stay on track with it too.”

On Rent Loan

“I didn’t wanna do payday loans because you’re paying back more than you get. [The Rent Loan] was like, you get the $500, and pay it back. And that’s what I liked about it.”

“[Rent Loan] is helpful because it’s a set amount and thats exactly what you’re paying back. It’s not like by the time you finish paying, you’ve paid double. That’s why I don’t like doing payday loans.”

Nina Oklahoma City, OK

Nina works a full-time job, and also has her own catering business. She shares a two bedroom apartment with her 6-year-old son and her boyfriend, a full-time student who works nights.  She uses Rent Splitting to help with tight cash flow and used a Rent Loan to help when she had unexpected car repair bills.

On Rent Splitting

“That has been extremely helpful, that has been one of the main reasons why we first heard about this place and decided to apply”

“It has helped tremendously, just because we’ve had a bunch of car trouble. We’ve had to replace a lot of things, breaks, tires, it’s just crazy to see. So being able to split rent is… thank goodness we have the extra couple dollars and can pay it each two weeks. We love it.”

On Rent Loan

“I applied at the very start of our car troubles. It was our alternator, and it was like $700 to get completely replaced. And we had no choice because we’re a one car household so I needed it done immediately.

“Our electric bill, especially during December, had skyrocketed but we had finally gotten that paid off with that [Rent Loan] too.”
